Milton Berry Stewart was born on February 19, 1954, in New York, NY to Eddie Stewart and Marilyn (McClain) Stewart. He was educated in the NYC public schools and graduated from Martin Van Buren High School. He attended York College and married Karen Chamberlain; and to this union his first child Tanya Daye Stewart was born in 1977.
In the early 1970s, Milton began working for the New York State Thruway at the Westchester toll and during his employment, he first set eyes on his lifetime sweetheart, Demetria. They exchanged numbers, began dating and became inseparable life partners.On October 1, 1988, Milton married the love of his life Demetria; and to this union they welcomed Victoria Ann and Alexander McClain.
Milton began working for the NYC Department of Sanitation in 1988 and retired after 27 yearsof service. During his tenure there he formed many lifelong friendships; everyone knew and loved “Stew”.
Milton loved to travel and would fondly recall his over forty cruises. He loved music and dancing, especially the oldies and slow dancing with his sweetheart Demetria. Milton was extremely handy and could fix almost anything! He loved gadgets and shopping for deals. Milton’s smile and laugh could brighten any room. All babies, dogs and cats found their way to Milton’s lap and arms for his amazing hugs and his astounding ability to put them to sleep. Milton was also a man of God, and he was an active and dedicated member of the United Church of Spring Valley and faithfully served as its Trustee until it closed in 2018.
During his retirement he took great care of his mother-in-law Cynthia, and later began working part-time at Elmwood Elementary school in 2018.In true Milton fashion, he made quick friends with the staff; and the children loved Milton or as they called him “Mr. Snow”.Milton and Demetria had their dream home built and became residents of Wesley Chapel, Florida in October 2020. Milton was the ultimate caregiver and provider for his family—and anyone that knew Milton knew his family was his heart.
Milton is survived by his loving wife of 32 years,Demetria Stewart and their children: Victoria Ann and Alexander McClain. He is preceded in death by his parents:Eddie and Marilyn, his brother: Anthony, and by his daughter Tanya Daye. He also leaves behind one brother:Michael, one grandson: Aaron, one niece Tamina and a host of family members and friends.
