Obituary of Florence A. Fay
"A Life of Love & A Loving Life"
Florence A. Fay, 95, long time resident of West Nyack passed away peacefully January 6, 2021 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born in 1925 at "little Bellvue" Hospital in Manhattan, NYC, New York, she was the oldest of five children of Rocco and Catherine (Amato) Vulcano.
She remained a "city girl" all her life, loved the East Side, & was always proud of having graduated from NY's Washington Irving High School. After graduation, she worked as Secretary/Office Manager at Empire Electroplating Co. for several yrs, using her typing and stenography skills.
In 1947, she married Thomas B. Fay, owner of West Nyack Appliance Co. her loving husband of 55 years, until his death in 2002.
Together, they built a family of their own while still connected to their extended families.
In 1963, they moved up to 'rural' Rockland County where they became avid members of St. Anthony's R.C Church, Nanuet, NY. Florence brought her devotion to the Blessed Mother & the Infant of Prague, which she instilled into her growing family.
A full-time Homemaker, she continued to use her Secretarial skills serving as an officer in her husband's Corporation, and in typing many of her children's term papers, often joking that she had received a college education through them.
Her home was always open to family and friends, including many friends of her children.
A welcolmed meal was always available, & a bed which was gratefully accepted.
She was an excellent cook, reveled in new recipes, & tried new foods, while incorporating the standard Italian foods in recipes handed down from her Mother, Aunts, etc. Many cookbooks & clippings surrounded her in her kitchen. She recently met the author/chef, Lidia, at a book signing in Nanuet, & was excited about that at age 93.
She loved many types of music, collecting 331/3 record albums, then CD's of her favorites; she had every recording of Frank Sinatra's from early on, & was an expert on the tunes. In the 70's, she won a contest sponsored by the new, local radio station, WRKL, calling in the correct title & author of an obscure Sinatra song by Rod McCuen.
A quiet, gentle woman, with a ready laugh, she was always available for a chat, consult, or support. She liked everyone, was fair to all, but most of all she LOVED us all.
This continued over the years, and she fostered relationships with each of her children, grand-children, God-Children, relatives and friends. Each one believed that they were special, and each one was. That will be sorely missed.
Florence, Aunt Florrie, Mrs. Fay, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma leaves a wonderful Legacy.
She is survived by her loving Sister, Antoinette of Punta Gorda, Florida, daughter Maureen of Fort Lee, NJ, sons Thomas of Cape May Courthouse, NJ, & Kevin of Naples Fl & Hartsdale, NY, daughters Patricia, of Nanuet & Sheila Chesterman (Fred) of Tappan, NY, many nieces & nephews, cousins; Grandson, Peter Fay, Christopher Fay (Kate) Kerrianne Fay Goodwin, (Chris), Erin Fay, Daniel Goodwin, Emma Fay Goodwin, Julia Fay Chesterman, Gerard Chesterman, Elizabeth Chesterman. And, by Great-Grands, Barrett, Finnegan & Shannon Fay, Harper, Keira, Ryan Goodwin. Friends, especially Margarita Walters, Tom Darcy, & extended family , far & wide.
She was pre-deceased in death by her parents & sibblings Vincent, Catherine and Pauline.
A light has gone out of our lives...a life of love & a loving life. RIP, Mom
