Obituary of William P. Poleway

William “Bill” Poleway passed away peacefully on December 13th at the age of 92 with the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Lorraine, by his side. Bill was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.  

Bill was born January 19, 1928 on Market Street, on the lower eastside of Manhattan, to John and Mary Poleway. After graduating from P.S 65, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945, earning the Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Theater Medal and Victory Medal. In 1950, he joined the United States Marine Corps rising to the rank of Corporal during the Korean War. After service to his country, Bill had a decorated 28 year career as an officer in the New York Police Department - 28 Precinct. During his time in the NYPD he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College. And in subsequent years, he became a successful entrepreneur and business owner.

From Brooklyn to Queens and finally to Rockland County, Bill’s first priority was always his family and he would always put family before himself. He and Lorraine married on June 19th, 1956 in what was the beginning of a 63 year love story. He cherished his 4 sons and adored his 10 grandchildren. His extraordinary strength, courage and tenacity served as the backbone and greatest source of inspiration for his family through both thick and thin. A parishioner at St. Anthony’s for 53 years, Bill was ardent and devout in his Christian faith. As an active member in the parish, he earned the moniker the “oldest altar boy” in Rockland County. One of his favorite pastimes was spending hours at the West Nyack Swim Club with his friends.  

Bill is survived by his loving wife Lorraine; 4 sons and their spouses Christopher and Elizabeth, William and Evelyn, Mark and Jeanine, John and Danielle; and 10 grandchildren, Monica, Michael, Margo, Caroline, Alexandra, Luke, Olivia, Heather, Abigail and John Thaddeus.

The family will be accepting friends and well-wishers at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home, 728 West Nyack Road, West Nyack NY Tuesday December 15th from 2PM – 4PM. A Funeral Service is scheduled for Wednesday, December 16th at 10AM Saint Anthony’s Church in Nanuet, New York.
