Obituary of William J. Powers
William J. Powers passed away on September 23, 2020 following a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born on February 13, 1933 in Manhattan, NY the only child of Julia (Blacquiere) and William Powers. He lived in Queens until he was 16 when he entered the Marist Brothers where he stayed for 4 years and made several life-long friends. He left the Marist Brothers and entered the Army where he served for two years as part of the occupation forces in Germany following WWII. After his stint in the Army, he finished his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English at St. John’s University.
In 1957, he married the love of his life, Jacqueline Kehoe. Soon after, he embarked on a career as a educational salesman working for several publishing houses for over 30 years before starting his own company, “Maps Plus”, which he ran for more than 25 years. He was the past president of the NY State Bookmen’s Association.
Jacqueline and Bill moved to Nanuet in 1963 and raised a family of six children. Bill was passionate about his wife and his family. He had a huge heart, consistently putting their needs above his. Bill experienced his greatest joy presiding over holiday and birthday celebrations for his children and grandchildren.
Bill also loved sports and coached his children in Little League, softball, and basketball. He always made it a point to attend his 12 grandchildren’s sporting events, plays, concerts and graduations. Bill was also a highly respected high school soccer, basketball, softball, and baseball official. He officiated for more than 30 years throughout Rockland County.
Bill loved to listen to classical music and was an active member of the St. Anthony’s Church Choir. Additionally, he served as a lector at the church for over 30 years and was also a CCD teacher. Bill and Jacqueline were active in the St. Anthony’s Christian Family Movement program, where they met many of their lifelong friends.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Jacqueline who died less than 3 months ago.He is survived by his sons, David (Anne), Kenneth (Theresa), his daughters Regina Williams (Ted), Marta Decker (Mike), Mary-Karin Schlegel (Paul), Norinne Powers( Mira) along with 12 grandchildren Megan (Ricky), Kaiti (Greg), Corey, Travis, Austin, Liam, Lucas, Kylie, Jack, Andrew, Carson and Jonathan. He is also survived by his sister in law Corinne Brewer, her six children and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be from 4:00-7:00pm at the Sorce Funeral Home in Pearl River, NY on Sunday, September 27. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30am at St. Anthony’s Parish Church, Nanuet,NY, on Monday, September 28 with a burial to follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
