Obituary of Marie Rose Lacendre

Marie Rose Leccendre’ passed away peacefully at home on April 4th, 2020.  Marie was born to Claire and Elnaynis Leccendre’ in Dame-Marie, Haiti on December 8, 1915.  Marie went on to be with her Lord at the amazing age of 104.

At a young age, Marie was sent away to school at a Port-au-Prince convent where she remained until she completed high school.  She left the convent to work for the Notre Dame de Fatima Catholic church as a house manager for the local rectory after completing high school.  Marie Rose continued to work at the rectory until she immigrated from Haiti to Nyack, NY in 1978 to help take care of her 5 young grandchildren.  When her immediate grandchildren transitioned to elementary school Marie went on to provide daycare services to numerous children from the local Haitian community.  She continued this work for over a decade.

Marie Rose was the matriarch of the Denis family and one of the mothers of the Rockland Haitian community.  She remained an active member of her beloved St. Ann’s church until she was unable to continue attending due to her declining health.  She was an excellent cook, herbalist, Christian, and one tough cookie.  Marie Introduced her love of music and history to her grandchildren through Saturday gatherings full of music, food, and stories.  She often shared stories full of traveling to neighboring islands of the Bahamas and Guadeloupe for her work.  She later expanded her love of travel through church trips with her family.
