Phyllis DeDeo

Obituary of Phyllis DeDeo

Phyllis DeDeo, a resident of New City, NY for over 60 years, was 100 years young when she passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020.  Phyllis was born December 11, 1919 in the Bronx, NY, the daughter of two Italian immigrants and the sister of four siblings.

In 1956, Phyllis moved to New City with her husband, Anthony DeDeo, and her three children.  She worked at Assumption School in Emerson, NJ, where she was a dedicated teacher for over 25 years.  She was beloved by both students and staff for her generous heart, vibrant energy, and constant jokes.  That energy remained throughout her life, continuing to substitute teach well into her 80s and still tap dancing into her 90s.  A devote lover of music, she still sang up until the end of her life.  A constant entertainer, Phyllis loved to host parties at her house with her friends every month and never missed an opportunity to sing, dance, or cook.  She was known in her neighborhood as the person to go to for a great cup of coffee, cake, and a good laugh.  The kids in the neighborhood knew her as “the candy lady.”  She dedicated her life to her family and those she loved, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Her young spirit and generous acts will be remembered for years to come by those she touched.

She is survived by her three children, Richard De Deo and Barbara Farruggia, both of New City, NY and Patricia Kelner of Crescent City, CA, along with their respective families, including their spouses as well as Phyllis’ five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A memorial mass celebrating her life will be held at a later date at St. Francis of Assisi in West Nyack, NY.
