Virginia Abbate

Obituary of Virginia M. Abbate

Virginia Marie O’Donnell Abbate, born and raised in the Bronx, NY, and long-time Rockland County resident, passed peacefully on January 14.

Virginia was born to Michael Francis and Elizabeth O’Donnell on December 7, 1945. She graduated Cardinal Spellman High School in 1963, married her high school sweetheart, Robert, in 1967, and earned a Bachelor of Nursing degree from Dominican College after moving to Nanuet, NY in 1977. She worked in nursing until her retirement, including long stints as the first hospice nurse of Rockland County and Nursing Supervisor at Nyack Hospital.

Virginia was the quintessential life of the party. She was always the first person on the dance floor… even when no dance floor was available. She consistently looked at the bright side of life, enlivened the world around her, and searched for the good in all people. Her hobbies included cooking for her family, spending time at the canal in Cape Coral, Florida, vacationing in Long Beach Island, shopping at tags sales and antique stores, gambling at casinos, traveling and learning to play bocce.

Her greatest love was her husband, Robert (aka Rocco, aka Sam), whom she was married to for fifty-two years and with whom she raised four children. Of utmost importance to Virginia were her family, friends, and faith. Her devotion to all three always kept her buoyant and helped her successfully battle Stage 3c breast cancer in 2016. Most recently, she faced her diagnosis of Stage 4 lung cancer with admirable courage, grace, and dignity.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Abbate; her four children: Elaine Winship, Christine Koenig, Joseph Abbate, Robert John Abbate; two sons-in-law: Audie Koenig and Thomas Winship Jr.; one daughter-in-law: Alexis Abbate; two grandchildren: Jacquelyn and Emily Koenig; one sister: Nancy Morrison; and three brothers: Michael, Maurice, and Dennis O’Donnell.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Michael Francis and Elizabeth O’Donnell, and two sisters, Anne Rosen and Clare McCulloch.
