Obituary of Jim Cullen
James Cullen, 97, died peacefully on October 27, 2019 at his home in Orangeburg, NY.
He was born in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. After serving proudly with British Forces during World War II he immigrated to the United States, became a citizen, met and married the love of his life, Alice, remaining married for 65 years until her death. They were a perfect pair.
Educated in London and New York he obtained his CPA at Columbia University. In 1953 he joined the Wall Street firm Myer, Greene & Degge, now located in Pearl River, NY. As senior partner he piloted the firm for more than 57 years. A few of Jim’s accomplishments include maintaining his CPA license and memberships in NYSSCPA, AICPA; has been registered with the SEC and the prestigious Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators, London, UK. There, approved to act as auditor by the English Board of Trade, he assisted in putting a U.S. company on the London Stock Exchange.
He was Chairman of Trustees and lifelong member of the Armagh Club, NYC, the Columbia Club and the Princeton Club. He was a devout Catholic and Knight of Columbus.
Jim was a vital, active man who loved to ride horses, play tennis and go for long walks. Most of all, he enjoyed helping his family, friends, clients and colleagues with his astute business acumen. He was a supporter of the arts and an ardent philanthropist in his community. Known to everyone as an elegant man he was admired and respected as a person of honesty, integrity, wit, humor and resilience. Jim was a true gentleman.
He was the most perfect father and is survived by his devoted daughters Dr. Maureen Cullen, Dr. Dianne Cullen, grandson James Cullen Taravella, M.S., J.D., son-in-law Dr. Michael Taravella, his many nieces, nephews and friends here and abroad.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2019 from 4-8pm at Sorce Funeral Home, 728 W. Nyack Rd., West Nyack, NY 10994. Funeral Mass is 10 am, Saturday, November 2, 2019 at St. Catharine’s Church, 523 Western Highway, Blauvelt, NY 10913.
