Obituary of Sherman Jaffe
Sherman Jaffe, 91, left this world peacefully on June 5, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Born in SE Atlanta on December 28, 1927, in the shadows of what would become Turner Field, Sherman attended Riverside Military Academy, Boys High School and graduated from Georgia Tech with a BS in Physics. He earned his Masters Degree at Brooklyn College and taught Physics for 38 years at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck NJ.
This southern boy met the love of his life, a Yankee girl, at a dance in the Catskill Mountains and they were married on July 7, 1957. Affectionately known as Pop Pop by his three grandchildren, Sherman loved engaging children in learning, hosting yearly science fairs in the 1970’s at Little Tor Elementary where, to the delight of all in attendance, he would blow things up and make science fun. He loved the NY Yankees, all types of music and traveling. During his sabbatical in 1974, he took his family on a four month road trip throughout the US making lifelong memories. After his retirement, he and his wife Mimi moved to Florida where they enjoyed spending time with old and new friends.
Sherman was a true gentleman, kind and polite until his last day. He spent the last six years in the home of his daughter and son in law where his absence will be felt every day. He was predeceased by his wife Mimi and sister Esther. He is survived by his loving daughter Suzanne Fleming and son in law Jay, grandchildren Jim, Dan and Elizabeth, of New City, loving son Michael Jaffe and daughter in law Miriam of Union City, NJ, and his special caregiver Julie who brought him joy and laughter every day.
Suzanne and Jay will welcome visitors to their home to share a memory of Sherman on Friday, June 7 from 5-8pm and Saturday, June 8 from 2-9pm.
