Obituary of Cecilia Volpati

Cecilia Helene Volpati passed away peacefully on January 6, 2019.  She was born on August 13, 1932 in Jersey City, N.J., and grew up in Cliffside Park, N.J, later residing in West Nyack, N.Y. She is predeceased  by her parents, Walter and Margherita Grebenstein, and her sister, Sr. Barbara Grebenstein, a Sister of Charity of Convent Station, N.J.  She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Ugo, her children Elisa Volpati and her husband Mark Goodwin of Bethel, CT, her son Walter Volpati and his wife Lori Finta-Volpati of River Ridge, LA, and her daughter, Maria Volpati-Loeser and her four grandchildren Xander and Anna Goodwin and Benjamin and Sophia Loeser who all adored her.

Cecilia “Ceil” later became lovingly known as “Omi” to her immediate family.  She graduated with a bachelor's degree from The College of New Rochelle in 1954, and  later earned her master’s degree from Columbia University Teacher's College in 1962. She met Ugo at a square dance in the basement of Corpus Christi Church in New York City, where they were later married on July 7, 1962.

Ceil taught elementary art for 30 years in Bergen County, NJ.  In addition to teaching, her passion for art spanned many different forms of media including stained glass, jewelry design, paper making, collage, as well as drawing and painting.  She was constantly learning about new and exciting art projects throughout the years, and enjoyed working on her art at home and on vacation with her children and grandchildren.

In 1982 Ceil became an associate member of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill.  They became her second family, and she loved becoming part of their congregation. She developed life-long friendships among the sisters, and especially treasured her friendship with Sr. Jeanne Shary. When the Chapel of the Holy Rosary was built, she designed and crafted a stained-glass ambry for the holy oils.

Omi was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother bringing great joy to all those who knew her.  She will be remembered by her smile, her hugs, her love of life and her creative spirit which will live on in all her many gifts of art that will be treasured by so many for years to come.

Visitation will take place at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home in West Nyack, N.Y. on Tuesday, January 8th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday January, 9th at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, N.Y.10976.  Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, 500 Fairview Ave., Fairview, N.J.
