Obituary of Jean O'Donnell

Jean Louise O’Donnell (nee Marxhausen), 88, of Tarrytown, NY, formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio and New City, NY, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2018 at Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Central Nyack, NY on Saturday, September 29th, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Ulf Lunow of St. Thomas Lutheran Church officiating, assisted by Reverend Donald Marxhausen. A private burial service will be held for family at Germonds Presbyterian Cemetery in New City, NY.

Jean was born in the Bronx, New York to William & Amalia “Mollie” Marxhausen (nee Bode) on November 12, 1929. She spent her childhood in the Bronx as her father was a NYC police sergeant, and she often traveled with her mother to Kingston, NY during the summer and holidays to visit her family. Jean went to Forest Hills High School and graduated in 1946. She went on to work in the office of Mr. J.C. Penney as a stenographer, and then as a secretary at the Museum of Natural History where she met her husband, John O’Donnell. Jean and John were married on October 11, 1958 in Glendale, NY and initially lived in a garden apartment in Whitestone.  Then, after starting a family, Jean and John moved to New City in Rockland County. She was primarily a stay-at-home mom during the first fifteen years in New City, but also volunteered part time for St. Paul Lutheran Church where she created books in brail for the blind and as an office manager for Dr. Josef Neiman. Jean was the longtime financial secretary for St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Central Nyack, where she was a faithful member for 57 years. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith and wicked sense of humor.

Jean is survived by her son, Thomas O’Donnell (Andrea Lloyd) of Tarrytown, NY, brother, Reverend Donald Marxhausen (Judy) of Highlands Ranch, CO, grandsons Daniel O’Donnell of Cincinnati, OH and Liam O’Donnell of Colorado Springs, CO, nephews Paul, Robert, Steven (Janine) and Peter (Lara) Marxhausen, niece Dr. Sarah Marxhausen, great nephews/nieces Kelsey, Janelle, Stevie, Luke, Nate, Lexi and Cynthia. She is preceded in death by her loving husband John F. O’Donnell, parents William and Mollie Marxhausen, and brother William “Billy” Marxhausen.
