Obituary of James McLaughlin
James John McLaughlin, born December 28, 1933 in Manhattan, died April 7, 2017, in Oyster Bay, New York. Beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, member of the New York City Police Department and veteran of the United States Army, and longtime parishioner of St. Anthony Parish in Nanuet, New York.
He is survived by son Dan, and his wife Annmarie and children James, Christine and Bridget; son Andrew, and his wife Courtney and children Meaghan and Caroline; daughter Nancy; sister Greta, and her husband Bill. He was predeceased by his wife Peggy Ann, sons Timmy and Jerry, brother George, and sister Catherine.
Jim was born and raised in Washington Heights, the oldest of four children of Scottish immigrants. His mother died when he was 17, leaving him with significant responsibility for helping raise his younger siblings. Jim married P.A. in 1963, and they were married 39 years until her death in 2002. They moved to Nanuet in 1966, where he lived until entering Harbor House in Oyster Bay in 2011. Their first child, Timmy, died in 1972, and Jerry died in 2010.
Jim joined the NYPD in 1956, retiring as a Captain in 1986 after service in Manhattan North, a variety of precincts in Manhattan, and his final two years in the Bronx. He served in the Army in 1958-59, stationed in Baumholder, Germany. He earned an associate degree from John Jay College and, attending night school, graduated from Mercy College in 1982. He served as a Webelos leader and, in retirement, he ran errands, looked after other people, and walked the family dog, Brandy the cocker spaniel.
Jim enjoyed reading history books, talking to everyone, writing letters, drinking beer, watching baseball and old movies, vacationing in the Adirondacks and the Jersey Shore, and listening to the bagpipes, not necessarily in that order. He was the rock of his family, and he will be missed.
