Obituary of James Appollo, Jr.
James E. Appollo, Jr., died peacefully at home on March 12, 2017 at the age of 70. Jim was born in Manhattan to James and Ethel (Elia) Appollo and was raised in the Bronx. After his marriage, he moved to Valley Cottage where he resided until his death.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathleen (Flaherty), his daughters, Jennifer Appollo-Linares (Adolfo) and Lauren Appollo- DeMercurio (Anthony), his sister, Elaine Appollo, and his grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew and Sofia Linares and Anthony and James DeMercurio.
Jim worked in sales for many years before embarking on a second career as a registered nurse. He worked in the operating room at New York Presbyterian, Columbia for 10 years. The following 24 years were spent at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he was manager of Sterile Processing before transferring to the Same Day Hospital operating room.
Jim proudly served in the United States Army from 1966 -1968.
Known for his sensitive ear and perfect pitch, Jim loved to sing and harmonize. He was the lead singer for multiple groups during his lifetime and performed at venues throughout the tristate area.
Jim loved to travel and to learn about other cultures. Although his plans were to visit every country, he was pleased that he was able to travel to 55 of them.
Along with singing, Jim filled his retirement days working on his electric trains and spent many hours enjoying this hobby with his beloved grandsons.
Jim’s calm, mellow soul and spirit of optimism were appreciated by all he met. His kindness and love will fill our hearts forever.
Visitation will be on Thursday, March 16, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 10 am at St Ann’s Church, Nyack New York.
Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Rockland Lake.
