. Weldon R Donsbach, 94, formerly of Bethel, CT, peacefully passed away in Hospice Care at the Tolstoy Foundation on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born in San Antonio, TX on Oct. 4, 1923, to Adoph and Cora (Fricke) Donsbach. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from California Institute of Technology in October 1944, and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Texas University in 1947. He enlisted and served in the US Navy from December 1942 through June 1946. He met his wife, then Gladyse Hahnel, when he was a naval ensign stationed in Brunswick, ME, during World War II. They were introduced by Pastor Fehlau at Grace Lutheran Church in Lewiston, who would regularly hold dinners for the servicemen and local women who attended church services. They married June 19, 1946, at Grace Lutheran Church in Auburn, ME.
He was employed by Westinghouse as an Electrical Engineer for 20 years in MD developing radar and defense systems, then moved to CT where he worked for Mosler Electronic Systems for 6 years, and returned to Westinghouse in MD for the final 9 years of his electrical engineering career. He retired to Bethel, CT where he spent many wonderful years with his beloved wife and enjoyed being near his family. In their final years together, he and Gladyse shared a room at the Tolstoy Foundation in Valley Cottage, NY.
He is remembered by his family for his strong will and ability to do so many hands on projects. His hobbies included wine making, photography, traveling, fishing, carpentry, home renovations, reading and investing. He was active in church, serving as president of the congregation at Holy Nativity Lutheran Church in Arbutus, MD and also Immanuel Lutheran Church in Danbury. CT. He sang bass in the church choirs and local chorus groups. When called upon, he would teach, act and preach. He was devoted to his family, both challenging and supporting them.
Weldon is survived by his children Ruth Dalen and her husband Keith of Estero, FL; Carlene Bassell and her husband Stu of West Nyack, NY; and Leonard Donsbach of Pine Ridge, AR; as well as grandchildren Matthew Dalen and his wife Bridget of Bethel, CT; Amy Garry and her husband Shaun of Naples, FL; Jeremy Dalen of Newburgh, NY; Timothy Bassell of San Diego, CA and Gregory Bassell and his wife Nikki of Nanuet, NY; four great-grandchildren, Aria and Aiden Garry, and Olivia and Adeline Dalen; also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Gladyse; and his 3 brothers Elbert Donsbach and his wife Ruthie; Alton Donsbach and his wife Roberta; and Morris Donsbach.
Memorial Services will be held on February 12, 2018 at 11 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Danbury, CT, and June 30, 2018 at 11 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Auburn, ME followed with committal at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
